She said efforts need to be intensified if Ghana was to realize the desired gender equality and equity despite making gains in that direction over the past 20 years.
She was speaking at a press conference to launch the 2015 International Women’s Day in Accra.
On March 8 every year, the world commemorates IWD in recognition of acts of courage and determination by ordinary women, reflects on the progress made in the protection of women’s human rights and calls for change and continued action towards women’s empowerment.
Ghana has made giant strides since the Beijing Platform for Action was adopted in 1995.
Even before the Beijing conference, Ghana had adopted several laws and policies to right the wrongs perpetrated by gender inequality, some of these include, the first legislation to ensure women were represented on national decision-making platforms.
To observe the Day, a consortium including the UNAIDS and the Ghana AIDS Commission has planned four main events in March towards the celebration of the Ghanaian woman.
They include feminism fashion, screening of highly rated film on HIV (Love or Something like that), women’s health walk and street drama and television engagement with senior and young leaders.
Appiah-Oppong said in recognition of health as fundamental to the empowerment of women, safe sex messages delivered through UNAIDS’ flagship campaign ? ‘Protect the Goal’, will underpin the month-long celebration.
The three message so of the campaign: condom use, know you HIV status, and reduce sex partners, will be conveyed to targeted audience for each even, mostly contributed by the youth, women in the corporate and the informal sector.
This is especially important as new evidence indicates that the highest mode of new HIV transmission are through casual heterosexual sex and also sex in stable relationships.
“The campaign offers an excellent opportunity to reach out to the youth, middle and upper class and professional especially in this time when condom use has been established to be low in Ghana while the target groups also consider themselves as low risk groups,” the minister noted.
Ghana has adopted a local theme for the celebration dubbed, ‘ Beijing +20, Advancing Women’s Empowerment’, which calls for effective action by all partners in the expansion of women’s empowerment. Enditem
