Ghana?s EC Is Deeply Corrupt ? Ghanaians In The Diaspora

Ghanaians Abroad Against Corruption is calling on the security agencies in Ghana to arrest the Electoral Commissioner Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan for acts of fraud and deception.

index? We believe it is scandalous that the electoral commissioner would add 241,000 votes to Electoral Results when the Representation of the people Act which although passed has not been implemented. This is a criminal and reckless act that must not go unpunished.?

In a press release issued and signed by Dr Dennis Doe Vormavor for Ghanaians Abroad Against Corruption, Dr Afari? Gyan told Ghanaians that he simply did not have the budgetary requirement for Ghanaians abroad to vote in 2011. So how come 241,000 Ghanaians abroad were able to vote in the elections?

They said, majority of Ghanaians are deeply shocked that the Electoral Commission quoted these figures, adding that their research among members of Political Parties in the UK and Europe show that apart from members who physically went to Ghana to vote, none of the members who remained behind actually voted.

?Ghana has 72 embassies with an average staff of 40. Even one you add the number of students, teachers, armed forces personnel serving in foreign missions they would not be up to even 10,000. How can the Electoral Commission put our democracy at risk concocting these figures??

They called on the African Union, the international Community and the Local Coalition of Domestic Election Observers to revise their notes about Ghana?s Election being free and fair and launches an independent enquiry. ?This is a scandal of monumental proportions which has grave consequences on the peace and stability of the country.?

?We believe it is time to stop allowing academics and civil servants to chair the electoral commission, We propose that in future a retired judge be appointed to chair the electoral commission and that no electoral commissioner should be allowed to serve for than 10 years in office. The Electoral Commission needs serious root and branch reform that brings it into the 21st Century and makes it transparent and accountable to the people of Ghana.?
