Ghanaians urged to sustain national sanitation day

Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo, minister for the Greater Accra Region (Province) Saturday urged Ghanaians to embrace and sustain the national sanitation day instituted by the government to promote cleanliness.

Mr Julius Debrah, Local Government Minister, Mr Samuel Sarpong, Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Kojo Bonsu, Mayor of Kumasi and Mr Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuiye, a Deputy Local Government Minister inspecting the waste bins and other sanitation equipmentHe said here at Tema Newtown, a suburb of the port city of Tema, 38 kms east of Accra in a speech read on his behalf during the celebration of the annual ?Kpelejoo? festival of the chiefs and people under the theme: ?Making culture a mobilizing force and customary tool for development.?

Afotey-Agbo observed sanitation still remained a challenge in the West African country and that government was committed to putting in place interventions to ensure the trend was reversed.
The World Health Organization and the United Nations Children?s Emergency Fund Joint Monitoring Program estimate that Ghana has 14 percent coverage for sanitation.

This, the Ghanaian minister emphasized formed the basis for the government to introduce the national sanitation day to create awareness among the people on the need to undertake regular cleaning of their environment.

?I will like to urge you to participate actively and sustain the national sanitation day that has been instituted by the government to ensure we live in clean surroundings,? he said.

The West African country would soon be voting in local elections and this minister appealed to the people to elect the right caliber of people into office to lead them in their developmental efforts.
He further asked for a deeper collaboration between the local assembly and the traditional council to ensure the challenges confronting the people was addressed.

The Tema Mantse (Chief), Nii Adjei Kraku II, called on the government to address the developmental challenges confronting the people.

The people of Tema celebrate two festivals annually; the ?Kpelejoo? and the ?Homowo? festivals.
The ?Kpelejoo? is celebrated to mark the sowing season while ?Homowo? is also celebrated to mark the harvest season. Enditem.
