BUSTED! Mary Ann Nnena Okasu in police custody

A 33-year-old Nigerian woman has been arrested by the police for attempting to smuggle 14 parcels of compressed dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, to Nigerian by road.

Suspect Mary Ann Nnena Okasor Nwodo, a native of Anambra State, Nigeria,  allegedly hid the dried leaves under  14 bundles of polythene bags ready to be transported to Lagos, Nigeria.

Operators of the bus on which she was going to undertake the journey, discovered a chunk of the bundled polythene and when the rest of the items were finally searched, 13 more of the bundles were found.

She was immediately handed over to the Neoplan Police Station in Accra to be prosecuted.

Confirming the story to DAILY GUIDE, Chief Superintendent Flence Adika, the Kaneshie District Police Commander, said the suspect was arrested at the Chisco Bus Terminal at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle around 12:30 pm Saturday, March 15, 2014.

Upon interrogation, Ann Nnena admitted the act and pleaded for mercy since she claimed that was her first time.

According to the suspect, she was a teacher trainee but traded in polythene products for a living.

She said she came to Ghana to buy bundles of polythene bags for sale in Nigeria when, according to her, a Nigerian friend advised her to add the dried leaves to them since they would fetch her more money back in Nigeria.

?Suspect said, she was therefore led to Tudu, Accra, to buy the dried leaves at a cost of GH?80.00 but, failed to lead the police to the supplier,? Chief Superintendent Flence Adika said.

Meanwhile, the substance has been sent to the forensic laboratory for analytical examination.

She has since been remanded into police custody by an Accra Circuit Court to reappear on April 1, 2014 for trial.
