The Queenmothers Association in the Brong Ahafo has appealed against the passage of the Plant Breeders Bill and the promotion of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) in the country.

They threatened to demonstrate in support of their Chiefs? position against the passage of that Bill.

The Queenmothers raised the concern at the close of a two-day workshop organised by the Centre for Indigenous Knowledge and Organizational Development (CIKOD) for traditional women leaders on environmental management through improved hygiene and ecological sanitation, on Thursday, at Abesim, near Sunyani.

The workshop under the theme: ?The Role of Queenmothers in Environmental Management?, was attended by 50 participants from the Region.

The programme, sponsored by the Konrad-Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), a German socio-political non-governmental organization, aimed at training queenmothers to become responsible in organizing and supporting the people in their respective communities to ensure cleanliness and good sanitation practices.

They said GM foods posed serious threat to farmers? sovereignty and also to national food security since the farm-saved seed could not be used for replanting.

They emphasised that the Bill be disregarded the contributions of small-holder farmers, who are the backbone of Ghana?s agricultural system.

GM Foods, they said, also had shorter life spans and could not be stored for a longer period.

Mr Willie Late, Deputy Executive Director of CIKOD, urged Ghanaians to weigh critically the advantages and disadvantages of the issue, saying its consideration of it must transcend politics because it was about the health of the people.

Nana Abena Boatemaa, President of the Association, thanked the organisers for such an educative programme, saying it had equipped them with knowledge and skills to organize their people to undertake regular communal labour environmental cleanliness.
