Mavis Esi Kusorgbor, a Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, said Ghana was pursuing the reform of the United Nations, especially on the composition of the permanent members of the Security Council.
The Security Council, with the primary responsibility to maintain international peace and security, is composed of five permanent members and ten non–permanent members with end term date.
?In addition to other reforms of the organization, it is the expectation of Africa and that of other interested groups that the composition of the Security Council would be reviewed to reflect the current geo-political realities,? she said at the launch of activities to mark the 70th anniversary of the UN.
2015 marks the global celebration of the 70th anniversary of the UN, which aims to honor the historic breadth of the organization?s development, security and human rights work.
The celebration, which will be marked under the theme: ?Strong UN, Better World?, also aims to unite member-states, global civil society and the many individual women and men working in common cause to enable a strong UN to realize a better world.
Kusorgbor said, through the UN and other international organizations, Ghana had had the opportunity to play a significant role in world affairs and boost its image.
She said the UN system might have lost some of its luster over the years, vis-?-vis the initial hopes that Ghana had for it in the earlier days of independence.
However, the fact still remains that the significance of the UN has been enhanced by the comprehensive scope and the universal character of its objectives and the universality of its members.
?The technical, financial and other assistance that Ghana benefited from the UN system since independence have contributed significantly to the shaping of our development path,? she noted.
The United Nations Association-Ghana was formed in 1952 to actively disseminate information about the purpose and work of the UN to the wider Ghanaian public.
Janet Edna Nyame, Vice-President of World Federation UN Associations (WFUNA), said it was the intention of the UNA-Ghana to use this platform to draw home some of its activities to wind up its three year-action plan which ends in December, this year.
?The presence of all of you here today has rekindled the spirit of UNA-Ghana and I therefore wish to assure you that the association would double its efforts to enhance the achievements of the goals of the UN,? said Nyame, who is also the Secretary-General of the UNA-Ghana.
She appealed to Ghanaians to join hands with the organization for the realization of the UN vision.
Ghana is a member of the World Federation of United Nations Association and represents Africa on its executive board. Enditem
