The Ghana Rugby Football Union has begun a massive campaign to transform rugby into a major sporting event in the country.

The union is aiming at a good representation in international rugby competitions especially in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio where rugby has been included with both men and women taking part in separate competitions.

As part of events to whip up public interest in rugby, the union in collaboration with the Ghana Olympic Committee organized a rugby exhibition at the Burma Camp in Accra over the weekend.

Community junior teams made up kids from Teshie and Madina took part in the demonstration of Tag Rugby with support from members of the national team.

?We are very grateful that the GOC has actually seen the essence of demonstrating rugby to the public as part of our activities that we will form when the Olympic day run kicks off?, the Secretary General of the Ghana Rugby Football Union disclosed to XFM?s David Apinga in an interview.

Mr. Francis Asare explained that they are working in collaboration with the National Sports Authority to place the union on the world map and is therefore calling on corporate organisations to come on board to make this dream a reality.

He stated that when qualification begins next year, Ghana will put up a splendid performance to qualify to be part of the Olympics in Rio.

Mr. Asare noted that the biggest challenge facing the development of rugby in the country is the lack of funds. According to him, rugby is a lesser known sports which attracts little funds from government.

He also lamented on the lack of proper infrastructure for rugby in the country but was quick to add that the new administration led by Mr. Herbert Mensah has outlined a blue print to have a standard rugby pitch for games.

He says despite the numerous challenges, the technical department is being strengthened and a few people are taking up refresher programmes especially on the technicalities of the game.
