Ghana Has No Proper Data On Housing

The President of the Ghana Real Estate Developers Association (GREDA), Mr Kwakye Dopoah Dei, has decried the unavailability of proper data on the housing industry in the country.

He said the situation posed a serious problem as there was the need to keep count and also have a data that would have on record all houses in the country for an effective plan of infrastructure.

He was, therefore, hopeful that in the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing would, in the coming year, collaborate actively with the association and to come out with a plan that would help solve the housing data problem.

Mr Dei was speaking at the 25th Anniversary Dinner Dance and Awards Night of the association in Accra. The event was on the theme, ?25 years of Real Estate Development in Ghana.?

It was intended to celebrate the contribution of GREDA, which is the umbrella body of real estate developers and related service providers in the country, to the advancement of the housing industry.

It was also used to recognise the efforts of individuals, companies and institutions towards the success of the association over the past 25 years.

Mr Dei also lauded the effort of members, noting that in spite of formidable constraints encountered within the industry, the members still delivered on their mandate and provided houses within 25 years.

He, therefore, urged all members to be prepared for the work ahead, assuring that the era when members were not having access to projects would soon be a thing o the past in 2014.

Ministry?s address

In his address, the Director of Housing at the Ministry of Works and Housing, Alhaji Yahaya Yakubu, lauded the association for its contribution to the development of the housing sector over the years.

He said the association had chalked up numerous successes over the years with a lot of houses springing up and urged them to do more by building houses that a lot of people could afford.

Alhaji Yakubu also advised them to use a lot of local building materials that would intend create jobs for people and also build houses that were of good quality.

On the issue of finance and infrastructure, he said government was putting together an infrastructure and housing fund to take care of the infrastructure as well as provide mortgage and finance for construction.

He further assured them of government?s commitment to continue to collaborate with the association to provide affordable housing units for citizens in the country.

Awards

A? Special Recognition Award was conferred on Former President Jerry John Rawlings for being a visionary and a true believer in the capabilities of the Ghanaian enterprising spirit.

The award was also to applaud his contribution to the establishment of the association in Ghana.

?In our early days, you moved heaven and earth in order for our young association to achieve its goal. It is because of you that many Ghanaians today have decent accommodation over their head,? a citation accompanying the award read.

Other recipients of awards were Regimanuel Gray Limited, for having the most homes and houses delivered in the 25 years of GREDA?s existence; Ghana Cement Limited (GHACEM), for being the best input supplier for the past 25 years, and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SNNIT).

The rest were the Lands Commission, the HFC Bank, Ghana Home Loans, and NTHC Properties Limited.

Individuals including the association?s First? Vice President, Mr Gaby Mattouk; the First Secretary, Surveyor G A Atieku; the Immediate Past President , Dr Alexander Tweneboa; the second President, Mr B D K Adu, the First President , Dr Torgbor Mensah; Mrs Cynthia Tawiah and Mr Ahmed Ali, both staff of GREDA, were also honoured for their selfless contribution to the association over the years.

Background to GREDA

GREDA is an association of Real Estate Developers established under the Company?s Code as a private institution limited by guarantee.
Its objectives are to, among other things, provide a united front in making recommendations to government on ways of promoting real estate development? and how to seek solutions to the practical problems in the property market.
