The Proprietor of Takoradi Senior High School, Mr. Abdullah Nsiah, has said private senior high schools (SHSs)were gradually collapsing due to unfavourable policy introduced by the Ghana Education Service (GES) three years ago.wpid-SHS.jpg
He said hitherto public SHSs were made to admit only junior high school (JHS) graduates who had between aggregate six and 30 and that enabled private SHS to enroll those who had aggregate 31 and above.
However, since September 2012, the GES had directed the public SHSs to admit JHS graduates who even had aggregate 31 and above and that had affected enrolment in private schools.
Mr. Nsiah expressed these concerns at the graduation ceremony of 97 final year students of Takoradi Senior High in Takoradi.
He said as a result of that policy, about 300 out of 500 SHS in the country had collapsed and threatening the survival of those in operation.
?Private senior high schools should be encouraged to grow because they provide quality education to people at a reduced cost,? he said.
Mr. Nsiah said despite low grades of students admitted into private SHSs, with intensive supervision and hard work by managements of private schools, their candidates passed the West Africa Senior Secondary School Council Examinations with much success and sometimes with better grades than their counterparts in public schools,
He said private schools were playing significant roles in the socio-economic development of the country by employing teachers and that their continuous operation would accelerate national development.
