A protest camp set up by refugees in a central square of the eastern German city of Dresden was cleared by authorities on Tuesday following a legal battle.wpid-09-23-2014RefugeesSyria.jpg

The refugees and their supporters – who spontaneously set up tents, toilets and other facilities in the square following a march on Saturday that called for tougher laws on immigration – did not resist the clear-up after an objection they had filed was rejected by a court.

They were allowed to continue their protest without tents, which a female organizer told dpa they intended to do.

The city authorities had given the refugees until 1900 GMT on Monday to clear the tent protest, but a legal objection by organizers delayed the clear-up until a court ruling on Tuesday.

Two dozen right-wing extremists attempted to storm the refugee camp on Monday evening following a weekly demonstration by the anti-Islam Pegida movement, but they were quickly stopped from doing so by police.

Dresden has emerged as a hub for anti-Islamic feelings, with some 6,000 people taking part in the latest Pegida march there. After it had ended around 100 extremists broke away and headed to the refugee camp calling for it to be removed.
