George Clooney lookalike winner looks nothing like George Clooney

It’s like looking in a mirror: Just in case you are confused, David Glendon is on the right and George Clooney is on the left

A winner of an Irish competition to resemble the Hollywood superstar George Clooney has left many bemused as the similarity is rather less than obvious.

David Glendon, a 27-year-old amateur actor from Kilkenny won the competition after seeing off 782 other entrants.

Just in case there was any doubt, Mr Glendon is now the proud recipient of a certificate to prove he looks like the star.

The judges decision has left many to speculate whether the fact the competition was held in an Irish whisky bar was a contributory factor to the rather strange decision.

One comment on a local Kilkenny website asked: What criteria was used? Possibly just one? That he be male and have hair?

Mr Glendon may well get to meet his famous lookalike in person as part of his prize is a visit to the Oscars next month.

The competition was organised by Kilkenny-based filmmaker Gabriel Murray who told the local paper: ‘My company were allocated four tickets to the Oscars in March so we will be taking David with us. He will also be attending the Irish Film and TV Awards next month.’

Mr Glendon told the paper: ‘I decided to do it for a bit of craic, for the fun of it. I am delighted to have won. To go to the Oscars, well that would be anyone’s dream come true.’

Hopefully organisers of the Oscars will be able to do what the judges couldn’t, and tell the two men apart as George Clooney is up for the best actor award on the night, which could lead to potentially embarrassing mix-up.

The two men may have more in common than one might think however, as well as both being actors, it was revealed last year Clooney has historic roots in Kilkenny.

Computer records unearthed his great-grandfather Nicholas Clooney left County Kilkenny in 1847, at the height of the Great Famine, for a new life in Kentucky in the US.
