Gender Centre Equips Young Women With Leadership Skills

As part of efforts to help increase women’s participation and representation in decision making at all levels in the country, the Gender Studies and Human Rights Documentation Centre in partnership with WOMANKIND UK has organized a 5days workshop for young women in Senior High Schools.
IMG_20150417_160125The training which took place in Accra, seeks to build the capacity of the women to be fully aware of their rights as women and also to equip them with skills and knowledge to groom them into transformative leaders for their schools and communities as well.
In interview with the Programmes Manager of Gender Centre, Ms Evelyn Nuvor, she explained that the training programme forms part of series of activities being implemented to increase women’s participation in decision making at levels/sectors of the economy under the Funding Leadership Opportunity for Women(FLOW) Project.
According to her, the participants were drawn from three (3) Senior High Schools in three regions in the country. Namely: Mpasatia Senior High and Technical, Koase Senior High and Technical. The rest are; Ada Senior High School in Ashanti, Brong Ahafo and Greater Accra regions respectively.
The Project Officer Ms.Araba -Etrew, averred that, at the end of the training the participants would become aware of their rights as young girls and women; willing and ready to take up leadership positions.
Adding that, they will also become members of the a Young Women in Leadership Clubs in their respective schools. She said, the clubs in these schools is to help make the initiative a sustainable one.
And also participate in the club’s activities by sharing the knowledge gained with other members of the club and the rest of the student population in their schools.
“In all a total of 48 students benefited from the training programme” The programme was structured into five main sessions with each day focusing on a session.
The topics treated per session included: Gender, Violence against Women and Children, Women’s Rights, Empowerment and Evaluation of the entire programme.
The training programme was facilitated by Mrs. Darko-Mensah, Project Officer and Madam Dorcas Coker-Appiah, the Executive Director of the Gender Centre.
