Says its public enlightenment programme paid off

The Federal Roads Safety Corps in Anambra has announced a 54.48 percent reduction in road crashes and 72.64 percent drop in the number of fatalities during the first half of the year.

The Sector Commander of the corps in the state, Hygienus Omeje, said this in Awka on Monday, during the launch of the 2012 “ember” months safety campaign tagged: ‘Operation Public Enlightenment All Through’.

Omeje said that a total of 122 road traffic crashes were recorded between January and June this year, a reduction from the 268 recorded between January and June 2011.

He said the number of fatalities reduced from 117 in 2011 to 32 in 2012, adding that the number of people killed in road mishaps also reduced from 75 in 2011 to 52 in 2012, a 30.67 per cent reduction.

?During the mobile court session between January and June this year, a total number of 527 offenders were tried for 622 offences, out of which 527 vehicles were impounded, 510 offenders convicted and 17 acquitted by the magistrate,” he added.

Speaking on the cause of the decline, Omeje said: “Our public enlightenment, which we code-named ‘Domestication Public Enlightenment’ in April this year, paid-off with the statistics of crashes this year compared to last year,” he said.

?I am optimistic that if we keep up with the tempo in terms of educating the motoring public on the proper use of vehicles on highways, we will be able to actualise the mandate of reducing road crashes by 50 percent by the end of 2012.?

He appealed to motorists to be more proactive and safety-conscious on the highways, especially during the ?ember? months. Omeje also urged motorists to avoid over-speeding and overloading, and to always fasten their seatbelts while driving.
