Former President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki is in Nigeria to meet with the country’s top presidential candidates for the March 28 and April 11 general elections.
Mbeki met with incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan, who is also the candidate of the ruling People’s Democratic Party on Sunday in Abuja, the nation’s capital city and main opposition candidate, General (Retired) Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressive Congress in central northern city of Kaduna on Monday.
Both Gen. Buhari and President Jonathan had signed a peace accord in January, to demonstrate their commitment to free, fair, credible and violence-free general elections.
Mbeki was accompanied by former Nigeria’s Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, during the meetings with the top politicians.
The meetings was in furtherance of the efforts to promote peace ahead of the March 28 and April 11 general elections.
Nigeria’s Independent National Election Commission has said it is ready for the rescheduled elections, due to be held on March 28 and April 11. Enditem
