Nigeria football federation beat a hasty retreat in its quest to hire an experienced foreign coach for the national women team, after those on its shortlist posted  huge financial and personal demands.

It was gathered during the week that the NFF contacted three world class women coaches, but the salary they were asking for was  more than what the Eagles’ coach, Stephen Keshi is taking home monthly.

Super Falcons

Based on this development, the NFF decided to look inwards and on Tuesday next week, a new coach from shortlist of seven will be unveiled and he is expected to kick start the preparations of the team for the Africa Women Championships billed for November in Equatorial Guinea.

“There was no way we could afford what the foreign coaches were asking for. They wanted to paid salary higher than what we are paying the Super Eagles coach. Secondly they want to bring in their own backroom staff against our idea of giving them local assistants to understudy them.”

“So we have no choice, but to fall back on our local coaches. We have a seven coaches on the cards and they include ex-internationals,” said a member of the NFF technical committee. He ruled out the possibility of  Falcons having another woman coach on the saddle.

“We had ex-players of the Falcons like Mercy Akide and Florence Omagbemi showing interest, but they lack the experience to handle a big team like the Falcons.”

The Falcons failed to qualify for the All Africa Games held in Maputo, Mozambique last year. And as if that was not enough, they also capitulated to Cameroon in the London 2012 Olympic qualifiers under the watchful eyes former international Uche Eucheria.

She wanted to stay on as coach, but the NFF ruled that it will not be wise to reward her with a new contract after the calamitous outing in 2011.
