Communities ravaged by?last year’s flood?in Delta on Saturday?accepted government’s decision to?relocate them to a safer area.
The communities accepted the decision?at a town hall meeting in?Asaba
The state Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, said during the meeting that government?was prepared to relocate them.
Uduaghan said?it was obvious that the?communities needed new homes after the devastation, adding that it would cost the state about N9 billion?to rehabilitate them.
The governor, however, mandated?traditional?rulers?in the?various kingdoms to look for?land space needed for the rehabilitation.
“The flood seriously affected?agriculture and rendered many families homeless. We provided some palliatives, we set up technical committees?and the reports were forwarded?to the United Nations and other?organisations.
“We have also engaged in series of meetings in the U.S. and?in Nigeria to ensure that the?victims?benefit directly,?? he said.
In her remarks,?Valerie Amos, the UN Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief,? said the meeting had offered her team opportunity to hear from the victims.
She said there was no doubt that the flood impacted on the people, especially women and children.
“There is, therefore, the need to focus on the needs for?children and the empowerment of women.
Amos promised to source for funds from?UN agencies to assist the state and called for the strengthening of partnership between the state and the UN.
