Fifth National Junior Athletics Championship launched in Tamale

Tamale, (N/R), Feb. 27, GNA – The Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) on Sunday launched the fifth edition of the National Junior Athletics Championship in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale.
This year’s event, which will take place from March 16 to March 18, is to be sponsored by Maria Tsakos Foundation, a Greece-based organization.
Over a total of 124 athletes amongst some previous participants, who have been invited, will compete in the various categories in search of honours.
Bawa Fuseini, General Secretary of GAA at the launch of the three -day event said it was open to all athletes aged 19 and below.
He said the organization of the event was also to select a formidable team to represent the country in the West Africa Junior Championship to be staged in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire from April 1, to April 3, 2012.
He said the team would also represent Ghana at the ECOWAS Games, which would be hosted by Ghana from June 2 to June 8, this year.
The General Secretary said winners at the ECOWAS Games would be selected to participate in the World Junior Championship scheduled to take place in Barcelona, Spain in July this year.
Fuseini called on residents of the Tamale Metropolis to show enthusiasm in the event by visiting the stadium to cheer on the athletes and enjoy the competitive spirit of the games, adding that the stadium would be opened free of charge to spectators.
He also appealed to the media to help create awareness about the event to attract spectators and encourage the athletes to put up their best performance.
