Andy Murray tried to take off Roger Federer?s head during this volley early in their Wimbledon men?s singles championship showdown, but in the end the Swiss star kept his cool in a match that was historic all the way around. Federer?s 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory Sunday equaled Pete Sampras? record of seven titles and broke the hearts of Brits who were hoping to see their hero become the first homegrown men?s champion in 76 years.
And all of it took place indoors, rain forcing the closure of the Centre Court roof early in the third set. Murray, who had reached three previous semifinals, choked up during his post-match remarks to the crowd but noted wistfully, ?I?m getting closer.
