Right activist and charity worker, Mr. Sam Ikpe Itauma has described the attack on Senator Helen Esuene in Essien Udim Local Government by some political thugs as a huge disgrace to the Akwa Ibom people. In a press release early this week, Itauma the attack was unnecessary and called on the Police, the State Security Services (SSS) to investigate the rationale behind the attack and bring the culprits to book.

“The Police and the Department of Secret Service (DSS) should swing into action, get these criminal minded individuals arrested and bring them to justice to deter a future recurrence…”

Mr. Itauma said he was surprised why anyone could organize such an assault to a highly respected woman and a serving a senator in the Federal Republic of Nigeria who supposed to be protected by men.

“I hereby condemn in no uncertain terms, the brutal attack on Senator Helen Esuene and her campaign team in Essien Udim….These barefaced criminals should be ashamed of themselves for attacking a woman instead of protecting and encouraging her”

The Eket born activist called on the Eket people to Eket people to remain calm while putting pressure on the relevant security agency to take appropriate measure; and reminded them of the aged long tradition of peace and harmonious relationship with others.

“The Eket people should not tread the lane of tit-for-tat and vendetta but put pressure on the relevant authorities to take appropriate action, as vengeful attribute has never been part of our culture, going by the peaceful nature and rapprochement embedded in our custom and tradition.” He admonished

Itauma described Senator Esuene as an asset to the Eket Nation and Akwa Ibom in general even as he acknowledged her tremendous contribution to the growth of the state via employment and youth empowerment.

The New York based Akwa indigene, who is also the Director of Itauma Foundation called on the youths to be wary of desperate politicians who do not have them in their agenda but just use and abandon them after achieving their political aims.

“Akwa Ibom youths should not allow themselves to be used as thugs by misguided and desperate politicians during election period only to abandon them as soon as they climbed to power”

Meanwhile, the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Chief Goddwill Akpabio has ordered the arrest of the Essien Udim Peoples’ Democratic Party Chairman, Mr Friday Udoh. who also suffered part of the bite unleashed on Senator Esuene during her consultation tour in Essien Udim, the Akpabio Local Government Area. Detail of his arrest still remains sketchy.
