Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien could play in Saturday’s final of the UEFA Champions League against Bayern Munich thanks to injuries and suspensions.

The Ghanaian, who has struggled for playing time in the Blues since manager Roberto Di Matteo took over, is fighting to play in Saturday’s game.

His quest has been boosted by the fact several players from the Premier League are unavailable as they fight to be European champion for the first time in the club’s 107-year history.

Captain John Terry, defender Branislav Ivanovic and midfield pair Ramires and Raul Meireles suspended while doubts still remain over the fitness of Davis Luiz even though he has returned to training.

Essien has struggled to find anything like his best form since returning from a serious knee injury earlier this season.

But he was overly impressive when they defeated Blackburn Rovers on Saturday in the final game of the English Premier League.

Essien created the second goal with a powerful run off the right hand flank and into the area before squaring the ball to Raul Meireles who drove a low shot beyond goalkeeper Kean.

His presence in the match against Blackburn could be one of the option Di Matteo is considering in the face of suspensions and injuries Chelsea are facing.

“With the suspensions we have, I’m still trying to find some solutions,” Di Matteo said.

“If that’s worst case scenario, we will take some reserve team players onto the pitch.

“I’ve been trying some things out in training. We’ll see what happens.”

Essien was a key part of the Chelsea squad that reached the final of the competition in 2008.
