The defense chiefs of Egypt and Spain signed on Tuesday a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on military cooperation between the two countries, official MENA news agency reported. Egypt
The agreement came after talks here in Cairo between Egyptian Defense Minister Sedqi Sobhi and his Spanish counterpart Pedro Morenes to enhance cooperation in the military field.
“The MoU includes cooperation in the military fields, expertise exchange and joint training between the two sides,” according to the report.
The agreement came a few days after Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi paid a visit to Madrid late last month, and met with Spanish King Felipe VI as well as other senior Spanish officials. The two sides also signed a security agreement.
Both Egypt and the Western world are now facing tremendous burden to fight a growing wave of terrorism, and that has played a key role in boosting their once-strained ties.
Many Western nations rejected the ouster of Egypt’s former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013. Morsi’s downfall, which was backed by Sisi as then military chief, has created tensions between Cairo and other capitals in the Western world. Enditem
