altThe Ashanti Region was hit with two bloody accidents last Saturday claiming three lives including that of a medical doctor and a policeman. It also left four others seriously injured.

In one of the accidents, which occurred under freaky circumstances, a car on reverse gear knocked and killed a female medical doctor of the Suntreso Hospital, Dr Philomena Osei, just after she had closed from church in Kumasi.

For the other accident, a logging truck spilled its load into oncoming traffic killing two persons including a policeman and injured four.

Briefing the Daily Graphic about the Kumasi accident, the Ashanti Regional Commander of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), Mr G.D. Hlordzi, said the accident happened in front of the Seventh Day Adventists (SDA) church at Amakom in Kumasi at about 2pm Saturday.

He said the church had closed and members of the congregation were leaving for their various homes.

The commander stated that one of the church members had given his car, a KIA saloon with registration number AS 517-12 to one of the female church members, Madam Naomi Kyei to drive.

Whilst Naomi was reversing the vehicle, it hit Dr Osei who stood a distance away, killing her instantly.

The accident threw the whole church into a state of mourning as many wept uncontrollably over the death of the doctor described as a committed member of the Adventist faith.

The remains of the medical doctor had been deposited at the morgue of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital whilst Naomi was arrested.

In the other accident, which happened at Nobewam near Konongo, the Konongo Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Alex Amenyo who briefed Daily Graphic said the accident struck about 4.45pm.

He did not mention the names of the victims but said the deceased policeman was a sergeant.

Chief Supt Amenyo said the truck carrying seven logs was heading from Konongo towards Kumasi.

On reaching a point of the road, the MTTU commander quoted eye witnesses as saying that the driver of the truck attempted to swerve around a stationery vehicle part of which was on the main road.

The truck driver lost control of the vehicle and run into an oncoming Toyota Forerunner 4×4.

Logs from the truck disengaged from the trailer and spilt over the highway one of them hitting and dragging a police vehicle into the bush killing the sergeant who was behind the steering wheel and injuring another, a corporal.

Chief Supt. Amenyo said the police officers were returning from Bawku to their station in Accra.

In all nine oncoming vehicles were involved in the accident leaving two dead and injuring four.

The driver of the truck escaped and police were searching for him.
