Dechidaw Forest Reserve Pulled Down

Authentic report available to The Moment indicates that Dechidaw Forest Reserve is under fire since the forestry lawyers failed to appear in court to defend the forest reserve from being destroyed.??

According to report, the monitoring team on the 19th of August this year caught ten (10) men cutting down trees around Dechidaw stream at FRBP 2.

Five hundred and fifty-two (552) tress have been cut over an area of 2.0 hectres and one of the men has been arrested by the Afienya police station.

Findings specify that, the land was sold to one Estate Developer by the Chief of Prampram to develop and the time is due for the project to begin.

Meanwhile, all the forestry sign posts that were fixed at some point between FRBP 2 ? 4 have also been removed and destroyed.

Moreover, the Land Valuation Board (LVB) which is the statutory body ensuring that land required for projects are properly acquired and also transparent procedures are followed and fair and adequate compensation is paid failed to reply several letters written to them by the authorities of the forestry.

The Forest and Wildlife Policy of 1994 aims at conservation and sustainable development of the nation’s forest and wildlife resources for maintenance of environmental quality and perpetual flow of optimum benefits to all segments of society. Specifically, the policy will, among others, ensure that the country’s permanent estate of forest and wildlife resources are managed and enhanced for preservation of vital soil and water resources, conservation of biological diversity and the environment and sustainable production of domestic and commercial produce.

The lawyers of land and forestry commission failed numerous times appearing before the Tema circuit court to defend the Dechidaw Forest Reserve and this has given the judge to rule on behave of the Chief and people of Prampram.

In a telephone interview with Nene Atsure Benta, Mankrolo of Prampram he said, ?I have no idea of the action taken by those men but will verify and get back to you in a due time?.

He averred that sand winners have entered into Dechidaw Forest Reserve to win sand while the stream that provides water for the people of Prampram and its environment is also been polluted due to the tress cutting and inefficiency of the lawyers of land and forestry commission.
