TurkeyForeign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was chosen Thursday by the ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) leadership to replace Recep Tayyip Erdogan as party chief and prime minister.

Erdogan announced the decision at a televised AKP meeting in Ankara.

The moves will have to be confirmed by a party convention next week after which Davutoglu will need to be elected as head of government by parliament, where the AKP has a majority.

Erdogan will be sworn in as president next week, after winning elections this month.

By law, the president cannot have a party affiliation, but Erdogan is expected to continue to hold sway in the party.
