The relative peace enjoyed by Bayelsans was disrupted as two notorious cult groups Greenlanders and Icelanders engaged in violent confrontation which left one dead and several others injured.
Governor Henry Seriake Dickson had recently signed the Anti-Secret Cult Bill into law with a directive to security agencies to fish out cultists from the state, warning that anyone caught would risk a 10-year jail term without an option of fine.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Olakpe, whose men had been placed on red alert to smoke out cultists had also cried out recently that sponsors of cultists in the state had been sending threat messages to his phone.

In the renewed hostilities, the two groups were said to have clashed at Gbamatoru, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
Though the cause of the clash could not be ascertained, sources said it could not be unconnected to the supremacy battle going on between the two groups.

Eyewitness account said various weapons such as guns, machetes, cudgels were freely used and in the ensuing violence, a member of the Icelander whose identity could not be ascertained was confirmed dead.
The police leadership, on hearing about the incident, was said to have immediately deployed its men to the creeks to flush out the cultists.
Olakpe who confirmed the development said he had earlier granted 72 hours amnesty to cultists to enable them surrender their arms and shun violence.
