Who are in charge of affairs of our students on scholarships in foreign lands including Cuba? Those in charge at the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Education must sit up to do something to stem the unfortunate and negative happenings involving our students in Cuba. What is happening is giving the medical students and the nation a bad image. ?Currently the sad news is that some of the students who ?fell foul? of the law through stealing have been arrested prosecuted and jailed in Cuba.? In a news item in myjoyonline titled? ?three Ghanaian students in jail for robbing in Cuba? Three Ghanaian medical students studying in Cuba on Government of Ghana scholarship were ??arrested for alleged robbery in ?a hotel.

The three, all male, are said to be children of some high level public officials including a deputy minister of state.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry has also confirmed the arrest to Joy News.

There have been recurring incidences of students on scholarship abroad sending SOS to complain about government?s failure to pay their allowances with some of them who were compelled to go into robbery out of frustration.

There is no doubt that the situation is having serious effect on the education of about 350 medical students in Cuba. This is not fair to a nation that needs more doctors

Another distraught student told Joy News the government has for seven consecutive months?defaulted in giving them $250 monthly subvention.

This has been compounded by the rising cost of living in Cuba, he noted.

He remarked, ?Withholding the monthly subvention is killing us?.

We? ?are unable to buy food, clothes, and undertake their research works among other important needs, the students narrated their ordeal as they made clarion calls on the government to live up to expectation? by sending them money.

This is not what Ghanaians bargained for when parents jostled with each other to get their children to gain scholarships to further their studies.?? When government signed a pact the government of Cuba to send over 300 Ghanaians to study medicine and other disciplines in Cuba many Ghanaians were happy. I believe that the backgrounds of these students were checked to assure us that the students were indeed qualified. However when they got to Cuba and began to study we were told that some allowances due the students were not getting to them on time.

What need be done now is for the authorities to study the situation involving the students to be able to?? deal with the frustration of the students.? It is important for further background checks to be made to determine whether the right calibers of students were selected to go and study in Cuba. If the selection procedure is found to be compromised in favor if unqualified students sanctions must be applied to deal with all those involved in the selection process.
