Malaysian Couple Jailed For Theft From Missing MH370 Victims

A Malaysian couple have been sentenced to prison for stealing from the bank accounts of people on the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

On Thursday, a Malaysian court sentenced former bank employer Nur Shila Kanan, 34, to six years in prison after admitting to 12 counts of illegally funneling out funds from the bank accounts and obtaining 77,530 ringgit ($21,600).

?It is very wrong for a bank officer to transfer and withdraw money owned by your clients. You took advantage of the trust given by them,? Sessions Court Judge Norsharidah Awang said.

The bank employer?s husband Basheer Ahmad Maula Sahul Hameed, also 34, had already been sentenced to four years in jail and three strokes of the cane.

He admitted to four charges of withdrawing 7,650 ringgit from the banking account of one of the missing passengers.

The two were arrested back in January after the Session Court issued their arrest warrants.

The embezzlement of funds from the accounts of the missing individuals was carried out between May 15 and July 8, last year, just months after the plane went missing.

The MH370 flight was on its way to the Chinese capital, Beijing, when it disappeared without a trace with 239 passengers and crew on board after it departed from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport on March 8, 2014.
