?We are under siege please come and help us from these criminals?, Opayin Anokye Fram, a 72 year old farmer, was reported to have cried for help when the police went to the Jimiso communities, which have been ?hit hard by acute ?water shortage, following the criminal activities of copper stealing syndicate operating in the area.

Luckily crack police personnel from the Obuasi Municipal Police Service ?at the week end arrested ?a suspected taxi driver, believed to be one of the brains – ?behind recent spate of ?vandalisation of the power system at the Jimi Water Dam in the Jimiso area, near Obuasi Township.

The suspect and his gangs have been cutting down steel poles in the area ?to steal ?copper cables, which they sell as scrap., Obuasi Police sources said. The result of these heinous activities is ?that there is no power to pump water from the Jimi Dam to several communities, of which the worst affected ones are Ahwiamu, Anyinam Ahnsonyewodia and Kriki. The Obuasi mine, which also depend on the dam has not been spared. The people in the communities say the diabolic activities have affected them badly – ? we now have to trek a distance to fetch head loads of water from streams around?.

Edwin Arthur Cade Hospital, the mine hospital, which serves hundreds of employees and patients from the communities on daily basis, has being experiencing water shortages because of this cable stealing syndicate. ? We need water badly to work, to deliver ?health care to the public ?but our efforts here are ?being undermined ?as we are not getting the right quantity of water?, Richard Cromwell, the hospital manager said. Other medical facilities in the Obuasi Township have ?also ?being complaining but the law enforcement agencies are yet to contain the problem as the cable stealing continues unabated..

The suspect, who gave his name as ?Forjourr?, is said to be cooperating with? the police in their investigations to apprehend other members of the cable stealing gang. The disturbing event seems ?to have put fire in the belly of the police as they are taking no chance? this time in their fight against crime in the municipality.? According to the police, in the past fortnight as many as 20 steal poles ?have been vandalized and all the cables carrying power to the Jimi pumping station have been ?stolen. At the boot of Forjour?s taxi, with registration number ?AS 2399 ? 14, ??were ?quantities of ?electric cables, which fit the description of the Jimi cables..

The poles and the copper cables were put up by the AngloGold Ashanti, ?about forty years ?at a huge cost to pump adequate water from the Jimi Dam to the mine and communities.?The inability to pump water from the dam means that hundreds of people in the affected communities? have no water? in their homes to cook and wash. ?If water is really life, the stealing syndicate ?is not only abusing our rights but forcing us to die. We have to join forces with the police to arrest them?, Joseph Amalga, a popular tailor at Anyinam said.

Ama Sadia, who have been operating a hairdressing salon for the past three years in one of the affected communities, does not understand why these criminals are ? toying with people?s lives, ?while the youth of the communities are sitting down, looking unconcerned. We have to gird our loins and fight these criminals?. ? While the police are counting on information from law abiding people in the communities to offer them reliable information, they say all those involved in the cable stealing syndicate will soon be arrested.
