Information reaching The Chronicle from the Ashanti Regional Police Command indicates that Lance Corporal Eric Amoako of the Zongo Police Station in Kumasi has been detained for shooting an onlooker, following a brawl with two gentlemen, alleged to be military officers.

The Ashanti Regional deputy Public Relations Officer, Corporal Godwin Ahianyo, told The Chronicle that pockets of information picked up after the incident suggest that the two alleged military officers engaged a trotro driver in a scuffle at the Kumasi Central Market.

According to him, the attention of the police officer, who was deployed at UniBank, was drawn to the fight between the trotro driver and the two gentlemen.

As a peace officer, Lance Corporal Amoako decided to intervene to ensure that peace and order prevailed between the two feuding parties, but he rather became the victim.

According to Corporal Ahianyo, the two alleged military men, now in the custody of the Police Buffalo Unit, were trying to disarm the police officer, and in an attempt to save himself, he fired a warning shot, which accidentally, hit another person, who was standing on top of a storey building at the Central market, killing him instantly.

He disclosed that the police were yet to confirm whether the two men were really military personnel, adding that police crime officers had visited the scene at the Central market, and followed it up to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, to ascertain details of the deceased, who is currently at the mortuary.
