A joint committee set up to streamline the relationship between the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has recommended a common code of ethics and disciplinary procedures for staff of both institutions.

The joint committee also called for a comprehensive job plan to be developed for KNUST clinical staff working with the hospital to enable the two, not only to assess the staff professional skills and service commitment, but also ensure their career progression.

These are contained in a report submitted by the committee at a ceremony at the KNUST campus.

Mr Yebo Okrah, Registrar of the KNUST and Mrs Patience Yeboah Ampong, Director of Nursing Services, KATH, jointly chaired the committee.

The committee?s terms of reference included, determination of the kind of relationship presently existing between KNUST and KATH, reviewing their existing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), developing guidelines to strengthen the cooperation, considering any other issues that in its opinion would advance the cause of the institutions and to make appropriate recommendations for consideration by management.

The report comes on the heels of growing agitations over payment of allowances to consultants from KNUST working with KATH and complaints about poor facilities and working conditions at the hospital.

The committee called for critical examination of the issue regarding the supply of consumables, plant, equipment and other resources at KATH.

Again, it suggested to the hospital to take steps to pay commensurate allowances to KNUST staff holding administrative and other positions at the facility.

It also called on the university to take the necessary steps to identify qualified staff of KATH for appointment as adjunct faculty to help promote greater cooperation and collegiality.

Professor William Otoo Ellis, Vice Chancellor of the KNUST, expressed the university?s total commitment towards working for the mutual benefit of the two institutions.

He expressed the hope that the recommendations contained in the report would help resolve some of the challenges facing KATH.

Professor Ohene Adjei, the Chief Executive Officer of KATH, also expressed the hope that the recommendations would help bring harmony to the relationship existing between the two institutions and enhance the quality of service delivery to the people.
