The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) on Wednesday affirmed the determination of its members to continue their ongoing nationwide strike until their demands were met.
The Chairman of the union at the Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo, Greg Esheye, said in Abakaliki that the union would not compromise its position for effective repositioning of colleges of education in the country.
COEASU embarked on a nationwide strike on Dec. 31, 2013 on allegation that the federal government had failed to implement an agreement it reached with the union in 2010.
The union is also protesting the non-implementation of ?dual mode? in colleges of education and imposition of harsh tax regime in some of the colleges owned by state governments.
Other issues raised by the union were ?imposition? of Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS) on colleges of education and the non-release of a white paper on the report of the visitation panel to federal colleges of education.
Esheye said that COEASU was irrevocably committed to ensuring that all issues that gave rise to the industrial action were appreciably addressed by the federal government.
?We embarked on this nationwide strike after several failed negations with the government and up till now the government has not shown any serious commitment to ending the face-off.
?Teacher-education is very critical in our drive to achieve qualitative and functional education for our nation, and we have resolved to continue with the sit-at-home strike until all our demands are met,?? he said.
He said the meeting of the union and the government on Feb. 20 which ended in a deadlock was a demonstration of the lack of seriousness to end the strike.
The chairman remarked that the low standards at all levels of the nation?s education system resulted from the government?s neglect of teacher education.
He called on relevant authorities and stakeholders to urgently address the ?gross neglect? of colleges of education, saying that there was a need to fully maximise the importance of the colleges.
He said the union would not relent in its struggle for the improvement of the standard of colleges of education in the country.
