The Executive Director of the Center for Public Interest Law, CEPIL, Augustine Niber and some civil society groups are calling on government to develop regulations for the compensation payment for oil and gas sector related marine accidents. This was made during a press briefing at the Akroma Plaza Hotel on Tuesday. The essence of the event is to identify the socio-economic and political challenges facing Ghana?s oil-producing sector. Ghana?s main environmental and social problems arise from oil spills, gas flaring and degradation of the land. The analysis is based on a review of government documents as well as materials produced by international development agencies. In spite of the large profits made by oil companies operating in the western region, most of the people of the region live in filth and without basic amenities. This has resulted in an increase in vicious activities orchestrated by community-based organizations wishing to draw attention to the plight of the people in the area. In recent years, both national and international non-governmental organizations have launched campaigns to address the issues, but little has been achieved because the oil companies are reluctant to be responsible and government seems unwilling to devise solutions. It is in this light that the civil society groups are calling on government to develop an effective oil regulation for the payment of compensation for affected communities. Augustine Niber says petroleum revenue issues should be monitored to achieve measurable development outcomes.
