Civiclub is a mutually-beneficial club wherein people’s positive actions of civic duty are rewarded when they contribute to the improvement of the environment, sustainability and solidarity.Barcelona
Toni Tio, co-founder of Civiclub, explained that the project rewards civic actions carried out by the citizenry with points called civis, which can afterwards be exchanged for discounts on products and services for leisure, culture and entertainment.
“We are a club that promotes the positive actions of the citizens,” Tio told Xinhua in an exclusive interview. “For example, blood donation, recycling, adopting an animal, sponsoring it, volunteering, cycling, etc.,” Tio exemplified.
People aged from 16 years can register for free Civiclub membership and every time a person makes a positive action he or she earns points through a code given by an entity with which Civiclub has a prior agreement.
“New technologies are key to the project,” Tio said, “The points are distributed in many different ways and all converge in an online platform whereby loading the codes, they become civis.”
After having a certain number of civis, citizens can have a look at the catalog on the website and exchange points for discounts to purchase items such as tickets to the cinema or the theater, among other things.
Thanks to the platform and the unique and non-transferable codes, Civiclub can track the kind of actions that each citizen has done, which are classified into three different categories: sustainability, solidarity and healthy habits. “Mainstreaming is what motivates our work team at Civiclub” Tio pointed out. “Have we motivated the person who recycled to ride a bike and give blood?”
Apart from the civic actions, Civiclub also rewards its members for raising awareness and spreading the word about positive actions through social networks. “We have been taught that we cannot show off when we do good things, but when you talk about it, you provide an example for others,” Tio assured.
Civiclub prioritizes optimism rather than pessimism. “You will not see a single negative message on our platform,” Toni said.
“Why have we become accustomed to being fined when we do wrong things and it seems so strange that we are rewarded when we do right things? From here, comes the idea of Civiclub, to create a platform that rewards all the good things we can do for our environment.”
This optimism of its creators is beginning to see results. Since its launch in November 2013, Civiclub already has more than 34,000 members in Spain and more than 90 partners and over 70 brands that redeem civis points.
The platform could be extrapolated to anywhere in the world. This has made Civiclub consider going international with the project to encourage global citizenship to “do good things” for our environment. Enditem
