Christian Atsu?s dreams of securing Europa League football for Vitesse Arnhem next season crashed on Saturday evening as they exited the Eredivisie Play-offs with after a 4-1 home humiliation against in-form FC Groningen.

The Black Stars winger went into the game at the GelreDome hoping to inspire the Vitas to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first-leg but things went from bad to worse as the visitors hammered them at their own backyard and dump them out of the race.

With Dutch-born Ghanaian defender Johan Kappelhof in firm control in central defence, there was little chance for Atsu and his Vitesse compatriots to successfully launch attacks.

The on-loan Chelsea winger, voted Vitesse fans? player of the season, was hoping to secure European action with Vitesse in case he extends his loan spell for next season but the 5-1 aggregate loss only means he will not taste European football should he remain at the club.

Atsu was involved in the sequence of play in the 63rd minute as Dutch midfielder Devy Propper cancelled out a Tjaronn Chery 25th minute opener for Groningen to give them hope.

But the visitors staged a strong performance with young Serbian attacker Filip Kosti? netting a brace to add to Richario Zivkovic adding the third a minute after Propper?s equaliser.
