The uranium company is 90 percent owned Taurus Minerals Limited, itself a subsidiary of the China General Nuclear Power Company, the China Africa Development Fund and Uranium Resources Co. Ltd.
The other 10 percent is owned by Namibian government owned Epangelo Mining Company.
Last week, Swakop Uranium’s senior vice president corporate affairs Peng Xinjian and the vice president human resources, business support Percy McCallum handed over a cheque of 60, 000 Namibian dollars (5, 000 U.S dollars) to the mayor of Erongo region for skills development.
The money will be used to help four small scale businesses through the Community Skills Development Centre (COSDEC), which trains young people in various aspects of businesses.
COSDEC has centers across the country.
Erongo mayor Cleopas Mutjavikua said Swakop Uranium’s gesture marks a turning point in his career because of the shortage of skills in Namibia.
He also said those who will benefit from the donation should work hard and focused to be successful.
Mutjavikua urged the recipients to emulate the way the Chinese work and maximize on output rather than rushing to knock off at 17h00.
McCallum said Swakop Uranium through its foundation works with various communities in the region to address social needs and create opportunities.
He also said Swakop Uranium will employ more than 1,200 people when it becomes operational next year. Enditem
