The Chinese Government is to construct a $6.68 million vocational training centre at Okpoti at Dansoman in Accra.

An agreement for the construction of the facility, which will be executed by Gansu International, has been signed between the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), the beneficiary and a representative of the Chinese Government in Accra.

Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuye signed for the AMA while Mr Gao Wenzhi, Economic and Commercial Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Ghana signed for China.

The project would be funded under the Chinese Economic Grant.

Under the project expected to begin next month, two buildings covering an area of 4,500 square metres would be constructed. The vocational training block would cover an area of 2,500 square metres with the primary school block covering the remaining 1,300 square metres.

The two blocks would have classrooms, offices, laboratories, library, a student kitchen, warehouse among others.

Mr Wenzhi said the primary school block would have 18 classrooms, reading rooms, and teachers? offices.

He described the project as an important one as a lot of young people needed training before securing jobs. Acquiring vocational skills, he stressed, improved one?s ability to get a decent job to reduce levels of unemployment.

The designs, he said, were ready and work was still ongoing to ensure that the project materialised.

Mr Wenzhi expressed confidence in the Chinese company assigned to the project, explaining that it had more than a decade of experience in the construction industry.

He urged Gansu International to work with a high sense of responsibility so it could hand over the project on time.

The AMA is already in collaboration with the Chinese firm, Huawei Technologies Ghana, to install 275 solar street lights at Cantonments in Accra.

Dr Vanderpuye said the project would support AMA?s efforts to provide quality education for its youth and expressed his appreciation to the Chinese Government for the gesture.
