Childlessness causes marriage dissolution

Court dissolves 5-year old marriage over childlessness

An Ilorin Area Court has dissolved a five-year-old marriage between Kudirat Saheed and Saheed Razaq over childlessness.

Kudirat, 36, who resides at Alore area, Ilorin, had earlier prayed the court to dissolve her marriage with Razaq, saying the marriage had not been blessed with a child adding that her husband’s relatives were fond of accusing her of their childless situation.

She added that “my husband and his relatives have been blaming me for our childless condition. I have been wrongly blamed since 2008 when I married my husband.’’

Citing an instance when her in-laws visited their house just to rain insults on her and continued to call her a witch she `said `My Lord, I want an end to this marriage because I cannot bear the threats mounting on me by my husband’s relatives,’’ .
The defendant, however, did not object the prayer of his wife, saying she was free to go and try another place.

“I see no reason why I should keep a wife that is not ready to accept any blame when she is at fault,’’ he said.
He prayed the court to grant the prayer of his wife without any claim.

The Presiding Judge, Mr Ibrahim Abdulquadri, then dissolved the marriage and issued a certificate of divorce to the plaintiff.
