President of Burkina Faso Michel Kafando has urged the country’s armed forces to unite, stay away from politics and serve the people. Army
“I strongly insist the need for our army to remain united, without factionalism or the spirit of elitism and to stay away from politics,” Kafando told the army when he addressed them on Thursday in Ouagadougou.
The meeting with military officers was held just a month after the cancellation of a cabinet meeting following a protest by troops from the Presidential Security Guards, a unit that used to protect ex-president Blaise Compaore, who quit the presidency last October amid protests against his attempt to extend a 27-year rule.

The unit was demanding the resignation of Prime Minister lieutenant-colonel Yacouba Isaac Zida.
Kafando who is also the commander of all armed forces, urged the national army to support the transition and “remain disciplined while performing their duties.”
“The only thing that should guide your work during this transition period is remaining united so that we can succeed,” the president concluded. Enditem
