The Brazilian ambassador to Ghana has expressed her country?s willingness to improve access of small scale farmers to modern productive technologies, irrigation, and credit and extension advice-while at the same time opening up rural communities to improved transport and marketing of agricultural produce.

According to Ambassador Irene Vida Gala, Brazil is ready to help smallholder farmers in the country to develop markets for their produce through the value chain process to serve as a key driving force for rural economic development; thereby, boosting agric commercialization and modernization in the country.

?In the face of the global economic crisis, international cooperation is very important in ensuring food sufficiency; we are ready to partner farmers and government on the development of agric sector and also explore other areas of cooperation.?

?Brazil has been successful in promoting small-scale farmers and family agriculture so we are prepared to partner Ghana in this regard,? Ambassador Gala said at the Brazil Seminar Presentation, during the 4th National Food and Agriculture Show (FAGRO).

She stressed that Brazil is considered one of the major agricultural producers on the world scenario; its development took place slowly and gradually. It was necessary appropriate public policies, investment in research and infrastructure; also fundamental is the presence of capable farmers and entrepreneurs, credit conditions and hard work

?Today, Brazil has a unique experience. It is this successful experience that the country is looking to share with other nations like Ghana?

She added that there is the need to invest strongly in technology to build capacity of the public and private sector agriculture organizations–thereby resulting in better yields, better financial returns, greater efficiency and competiveness of the sector.

?The state has to be strong in taking the lead, public policy oriented; the state must be fully in place to take the lead; from our experience both private and public is important and the state has to be there to support technology.?

She explained that land ownership is important in agric development and called on government to bring this discussion to the table for all stakeholders to make input as to the interest at stake.
