Boko Haram: Northern CAN replies JNI
… Says you’re fanning ember of disunity

Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 northern states and Abuja has expressed disappointment with the leadership of Ja’amatu Nasril Islam (JNI) for fanning the ember of disunity between the two major religions in the country.

JNI had at the end of its three-day retreat in Kaduna last week issued a communiqué, alleging that Christians were the ones disguising as Muslims to perpetrate terrorism in the country in the name of Boko Haram.

Reacting through a statement to the communiqué, the Public Relations Officer of CAN, Sunday Oibe, said the Christian body was convinced that there could be sponsors of the Boko Haram in the JNI leadership since the Islamic body was out to cause disunity between Christians and Muslims with such unguarded public statement.

According to CAN, “while we would not delve into issues not related to CAN and Christians in Nigeria, because we expect those concerned to react, we will not fail to see the link between this organized cover-up and support for the Boko Haram sect members in the domain of the JNI chieftains in the North.“It is gratifying to note that the sponsors of the Boko Haram are beginning to show themselves. But we are disappointed that the JNI, a group which is key to bringing this heinous crimes against the state and humanity to an end, is the very one that is fanning support for the Boko Haram.

“This is why the CAN is calling on the Federal Government and indeed the security agencies to beam its searchlight on the JNI leaders. We are, specifically calling on the State Security Service (SSS) to include the chieftains of the JNI in the watch list of the Boko Haram members.“The allegations are, to the extent that they are made to incite Muslims against Christians, aimed at causing disharmony among Nigerians.

“That Christians disguised as Muslims to burn churches in the name of Boko Haram is laughable.“Most of the chieftains of the JNI, including the Sultan of Sokoto, had at one time or the other, condemned the terrorist acts of the Boko Haram sect. “Today, the same chieftains are accusing Christians of burning their churches. Whose attitude is double faced? This approbation and reprobation by JNI is self-serving and can only exacerbate the already tense situation in the country.”
