President Assad’s brother-in-law and the current defence minister are among the casualties

The uprising in Syria heightened on Wednesday afternoon when a bomb went off in Damascus, disrupting a high-level security meeting and killing several people, including three top regime officials.

The rebels have claimed responsibility for what is their boldest attack so far.

Among those killed were a member of the ruling family, President Bashar Assad?s brother-in-law, as well as the interior minister, current defence minister and a former defence minister. Two other officials were wounded and are said to be in critical condition.

The violence has in Syria has escalated rapidly in recent months, with rebels setting up deadly attacks against the regime.

U.S Defence Secretary, Leon Panetta, said the bombing showed that the bloodshed is ?rapidly spinning out of control?.
