blakofe and Steve Harvey with Nicole Ari Parker in his studio End of an Era: Goodbye Blakofe and hello Ohenaba AkuaFor many years, fans of TV and radio Presenter Blakofe have been wondering what her real name is.  Well wonder no more.  For the artiste formerly known as Blakofe is now going by her Ghanaian name, Oheneba Akua Manfo.  According to Akua ?I decided to drop Blakofe and go back to using Oheneba or Akua because I travel a lot.  And in my journeys, I have somehow found myself being an ?unofficial Ambassador? for Ghana.  From America to Europe to Africa, people readily associate me as Mama Ghana or Mama Africa.  Each time I leave my house in ?African print? or accessories such as beads from Ghana, I find I am promoting my people?s culture, traditions and way of life.  As I have done on TV programmes such as GoldBlast, Amazing Ghana and Studio 53 where I had the wonderful opportunity to share Ghanaian cuisine, music, art, tourist sites etc. with an international audience. ?she continues:

My role as an ?unofficial Ambassador? for Ghana hit home when making a train journey from London to Kent where I was approached by a man. ?Ghana? he called out to me.  I was surprised, but apparently we had met at an event organized by the Cameroonian High Commissioner to the UK.  And what struck and stayed with this man was my love and passion when talking about Ghana.

As I gain more recognition and respect outside Ghana as an ?unofficial Ambassador? for Ghana, I feel it is important to use my Ghanaian name at all times.  More so as the naming of a Ghanaian child is very key to our culture.  As a Ghanaian, just by telling you my name, you automatically learn something about me (I bet many of you did not know my father is the Sanahene of Asamankese and hence the Oheneba).

That in a nutshell is why I have decided to drop Blakofe, and go back to being Oheneba Akua Manfo.  However, loyal readers of my monthly column (Reflections of an Ordinary Woman) in the New African Magazine will continue to know me as Akua Djanie, as that is my pen name.

I thank you all for your continued support and look forward to returning to Ghana soon to create more opportunities for myself and others. God bless our homeland Ghana, our President Mahama and all Ghanaians, regardless of ethnicity, religious beliefs and political leanings.?
