Eight people travelling in a 23-seater Benz bus were killed in a fatal accident at Kobina Ansah in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District of the Central Region on Thursday.

The dead, three males and five females, were on the Benz bus with registration number GR1047-H when it collided with an articulated truck with registration number AW 5117-11 in the area.

Seven of the victims died on the spot while the last person died later at the Central Regional Hospital.

It was a pathetic scene as mutilated bodies were scattered all over the accident scene.

Fifteen victims including a five-month-old baby and a one-year-old girl who lost their mothers in the course of the accident, have been admitted at the Central Regional Hospital where they are receiving treatment.

The bodies of the deceased persons which included the mate and driver of the truck, have been deposited at the Central Regional Hospital Morgue for autopsy.

Briefing DAILY GUIDE, the AAK District Police Commander, DSP Bernard Twum-Berimah said the accident happened around 1:00am yesterday.

DSP Twum-Berimah noted that the Benz bus was carrying traders from Moree to Fumsu in the Ashanti Region while the truck was from Kumasi towards Takoradi when the two vehicles collided.

He stated that the accident might have been caused by over-speeding looking at the extent of damage caused.

The Police Commander expressed concern about the way some drivers over-speed when they are driving in town.

The police chief and some of his men visited the victims at the hospital.

The Regional Manager of the Road Safety Commission, Mr Anokye disclosed that the victims were fishmongers from Moree travelling to Fumsu to sell their fish.

He advised passengers to caution drivers when they are over speeding, and advised drivers not to drive when they are tired.

DAILY GUIDE observed that the 207 bus which looked very weak and not roadworthy, was cut into pieces.

The bus had its parts scattered by the roadside while blood stains were all over the place.

Many people who saw the accident wept uncontrollably in the area and prayed for such incidents not to happen again.
