Beninese nationals will this Friday start receiving voter’s cards in readiness for the April 26 legislative elections, an official source said Thursday. Benin
The announcement came at a time when several opposition parties had decided to organize large protests on the same day to demand for the distribution of voter’s cards and strict adherence to the electoral timetable as stipulated in the constitution.
Some 4.5 million Beninese voters are expected to turn up in polling stations on April 26 to elect 83 members of parliament.
Elsewhere, Beninese Catholic bishops on Thursday urged Beninese nationals to pray for peaceful legislative as well as communal elections that will be held on May 31, 2015.
The bishops urged Christians to fast and pray on April 24 and May 29 so that both elections can go on peacefully.
The May 31 elections will see 1,199 communal and municipal councillors elected. These will later elect amongst themselves 77 mayors, 176 deputy mayors and 546 heads of arrondissements who will manage local affairs.
The term of municipal, communal and local councillors who were elected in 2008, ended in June 2013. But the elections had not been held at the right time in March 2013 due to what the government said was lack of the Permanent Computerized Electoral List. Enditem
