Residents of Axim and its neighboring communities in the Nzema East District say they are suffering from respiratory diseases they believe is caused by gas flaring in the Jubilee filed in 2011. A member of the Ghana national fishermen council in the western region, Michael Abaka Aidoo told newsmen in Takoradi that he is a victim.?
He claimed that several attempts to get the authorities involved to assist them have failed. He said Tullow sent in a medical team about a year ago to the community but the community members were not treated for their respiratory concerns but rather malaria.
?I was seriously sick and diagnosed of severe cough problem but instead when the medical team visited our community and gave us malaria treatment.???Michael Abaka Aidoo fears that regular flaring of gas could pose a greater health risks and therefore appealed to the authorities in the oil sector to run frequent health checks on the communities on their immediate shoreline.
