“Augustine tell me you were too gentle in your playing days and sitting before us I could still see you to be a gentleman,” Justice Dzamefe quizzed.

“My lord I don’t know where that notion came from but as someone who was born and bred in Takoradi I cannot be too gentle because I f**l a lot when I’m with my colleagues like C.K Akunnor but I also believe in showing respect so I’m a little bit careful whenever I go out,” he answered smilingly.

“Did you ever received a red card during your playing days because you look respectful.”

“My lord it’s quite interesting. If my memory serves me right the only red card I received was in 1993 when I was playing for the then Obuasi Goldfields. We were playing against Dawu Youngsters and my lord I was booked for asking a referee why he whistled against me.”

“Perhaps I thought he did that because we were going to play against Asante Kotoko after that match and my lord you couldn’t believe the referee apologized to me later on for what I wouldn’t know but let me quickly add that he was the same referee who officiated in the last local match I played before I moved to join Borussia Dortmund in Germany. I believe his name was referee Yamoah,” he added.

Arhinful who started his footballing career with a Takoradi based Soccer Missionaries (colts) also recounted how certain companies took advantage of them whiles playing an ambassadorial role for the World Cup secretariat.

“My lord I think some of the companies took advantage of some of us. For instance, on one occasion myself, C.K Akunnor and John Dumelo were asked by the cocoa processing company to shoot an advert for them which they even promised to pay each of us thousand dollars but after shooting the advert they called us to tell us that they couldn’t use the footage but my lord I drive around now and I see my face on billboards,” he noted.

“So are you going to sue them for breach of contract?,” Moses Foh-Amoaning asked.

“My lord we thought we had been called to serve so we did it whole heartedly. I was even in the US when I had a call that my face is all over the place but we haven’t taken any decision yet,” he said.

The Commission of Inquiry into the 2014 World Cup has been a fortress for some senior state officials but nonetheless Augustine Arhinful managed to tease the entire lordships into tears of laughter with his text book testimony.
