Some Level 400 Development Communications students of the African University College of Communications (AUCC) in Accra have called on lovers of multi-party democracy in Ghana to give equal opportunity to women in politics.

?As students, we have noticed with deep concern the negative attitude being shown by some members of society towards women who are involved in politics,? a news release signed by Mr. Zakiyu Iddris Tandunayir on behalf of the students has stated.

The release follows a recent research conducted by the students with the result showing that most women in Ghana are unwilling to enter into mainstream politics for the fear of intimidation, insult and attacks among others. The survey forms part of the students? final project work towards the award of a Bachelor of Arts Degree in communication studies.

Women politicians in Ghana face all manner of discriminations in their quest to contest for political positions.

They are subjected to insults, name callings, and physical abuse by their male counterparts among others. The 1992 constitution of Ghana guarantees every individual (women inclusive) the opportunity to join any group of their choice.

?We are therefore calling on all stakeholders engaged in women empowerment to rise up to the occasion and speak against intimidation and discrimination against women in politics. We challenge the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and all promoters of women?s rights to act now to salvage women in politics,? the release stated.

The project was aimed at advocating equal opportunities for women in politics as well as encouraging more women into politics.
