The Acting Registrar of the Architects Registration Council of Ghana (ARC), Stella N.D. Arthiabah, has urged architects to exhibit greater responsibility in their profession.

She explained that as built environment Professionals, every line they draw and every specification they make has cost, health, safety, environmental and legal implications — hence the need to put their technical and professional expertise into the service with efficiency, excellence and integrity.

Arc. Arthiabah stated this in an address during the 12th Induction Ceremony of the ARC for newly-qualified professional Architects.

The ceremony, which was held at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Accra, brought together professionals and stakeholders in the built environment: such as the Deputy Minister of Water Resource, Works and Housing, Dr. Hanna Bissiw, who represented the sector Minister; Mr. William Ato Essien, CEO of First Capital Plus Savings and Loans Ltd, who was the guest Speaker; Chairman of the ARC,. H.D. L. Yartey; the President of Ghana Institute of Architects, Adotei Brown; and a Fellow of the Ghana Institute of Architects & CEO of Graphiconsult, Theresa Afua Yankah, who chaired the event.? ?

In all, 55 new architects were inducted into the profession following a minimum of two years professional training and coaching at their various offices, and 12 days of intensive revision in areas covering Statutory laws and regulations including those on Local Government, Public Procurement, Fire, Environment Protection, and Architects and Professional Bodies Decrees.

Other subject-areas the inductees were taken through included Contracting and Contract Administration for both local and donor funded contracts; Project Management; Alternative Dispute Resolution; Office Administration and Management; the Architects relationship with his client and allied professionals; new trends in the profession; and professional fees calculation.

Arc. Arthiabah noted that the event marked an important milestone in the career-life of Architects, since they are now legally licenced to practice architecture as a profession ? hence, the ceremony puts them on a higher platform with a corresponding greater responsibility for service to the nation.

She encouraged the architects to face the future with confidence and enthusiasm — stressing that this is not the time for them to resign from their offices and go free-lancing, but rather the time to build more confidence and experience in handling the new technologies that are constantly introduced into the industry.

In his speech Mr. William Ato Essien inspired the new professionals to be courageous, willing to start small, recognise the God factor, be international in their outlook and also not to neglect their families in the pursuit of their careers. ?

In a short remark the Deputy Minister of Water Resource Works and Housing, Dr. Hanna Bissiw who represented the sector Minister, said Ghana today finds itself in an era of rapid physical development and Architects, Planners, Engineers and other Built Environment Stakeholders have much to offer in this regard — hence the need for these Professionals to undergo specialised training consisting of advanced education and internship for practical experience to earn a licence to practice.

Dr. Bissew disclosed that Government in collaboration with the Governing Council of the ARC will soon inaugurate a Monitoring Committee of the Council to enforce the provisions of the Architects Decree, specifically to identify and weed out individuals who operate in the country without licence.
