Our attention has been drawn to the arrest of the Chairman of the Omuma Local Government Caretaker Committee, Hon. Emeka Nwogu who was taken from his house?Wednesday?night in Gestapo style by a team of policemen allegedly numbering over 60, ostensibly over allegation that he shot at a Presidential billboard in his Local Government Area.

As a party, the APC is shocked by the sudden arrest of the Caretaker Committee Chairman which we believe is part of an ongoing but carefully planned strategy by the PDP and its cohorts in the security agencies to undermine peace, security and stability of the state and intimidate law abiding supporters of our party.

We need to place on record that the APC is a responsible law-abiding party which has and continue to serve the aspirations of the good people of Rivers State through the provision of basic infrastructure required to take our state to the next level of progressive growth and development.

We recall that following the actions of gun-totting youths belonging to the PDP at Ulakwo in Etche Local Government, law enforcement officers drafted to the area to maintain the peace were attacked. In the process, military personnel were shot and injured. To the surprise of well-meaning Rivers people, those responsible for undermining the authority, respect and integrity of the armed forces, were promptly released. This will not be the first time.

We are equally aware that a traditional ruler and supporters of the APC in Obio/Akpor have since been languishing in police cell over spurious allegations brought against them by agents and leaders of the PDP.

In the circumstances, the APC wishes to urge the Police in Rivers State to be an unbiased umpire. We wish to state categorically that the Police which is funded by taxpayers? money is expected to be fair and objective in its handling of issues that affect the peace and security of the nation, especially when it concerns matters which affect the rights of our people to free association, free movement and free expression.

Accordingly, we urge the Police to release without any further delay the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Omuma Local Government Council, Hon. Emeka Nwogu and all others who are being held for reasons which we know are purely political and unwarranted.
