The St Peter’s Basic School with the pupils loitering about after the incident

A JUNIOR High School (JHS) form three teacher at the St. Peter’s Basic School in Asawase, a suburb of Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital, was on Tuesday brutalised by parents of a pupil in the school.

Gilbert Amonoo was subjected to beatings by parents of a class six pupil at about 10:30am, in the presence of his colleague teachers.

Numbering four, made up of three women and a male, the angry parents stormed the school to ostensibly teach one of the teachers a bitter lesson for caning their ward.

Kelvin Ntiamoah, a class six pupil in the school, according to reports, was caned by his class teacher in the morning for being a truant.

Shortly after being beaten, Ntiamoah was said to have rushed home to inform his parents.

Annoyed by the report, the parents, DAILY GUIDE gathered, called two other women to accompany them to the school to deal with the teacher.

Upon reaching the school, the angry parents and their aides, the paper gleaned, marched straight to Ntiamoah’s classroom in search of the class teacher, who was unfortunately not there at that time.

Determined to find the teacher, the irritated parents asked the pupils of his whereabouts and they were told that the teacher was at the school’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) room.

They therefore marched straight to the said place, where they met a group of teachers and without any expression of courtesy, demanded to see the said teacher.

Sensing danger, the teachers tried to calm down the infuriated parents so that the matter could be resolved amicably.

While trying to calm tempers down, Amonoo, who was leading the crusade, was pushed down by one of the angry parents whilst the others pounced on him on the ground and beat him mercilessly.

Teachers in the school said they were afraid to the come to the aid of their colleague, who was struggling to free himself.

They told DAILY GUIDE that a pregnant nursery teacher who attempted to prevent the incensed parents from further beating the poor teacher was nearly beaten by the mob.

The parents, whose action caused fear and panic among the teachers and the pupils, left the school after their action.

When DAILY GUIDE visited the school at about 12:30 pm, the headmaster of the school, as well as the victim, had been taken to the police station to lodge a formal complaint so a medical form could be issued for medical examination.

What was not clear was the line of action the school authorities as well as education authorities in the region would take on the matter, but the paper gathered from the teachers that the school was likely to be closed down in protest against the parent’s actions.

Though break was over and classes were expected to be in session, the students were found loitering around the compound as the teachers had refused to go back to the classroom.
